“The Father of History” wowed a crowd At the Olympic Games with his collection Of travel memoirs which he read aloud. At least one skeptic had a mild objection: The tales were too outlandish to be true! In India were huge gold-digging ants? Arabia had two-winged snakes that flew? Egyptian women took an upright stance When peeing, but Egyptian men would squat? “The Father,” some now skewered him, “of Lies.” The question is, did he believe or not His own canards of such a whopping size? Herodotus, old boy, were you so gullible? Or did you just avail of legs most pullable? —Henry Rathvon
